Cracking Liquid Ammonia
Because there’s already an established infrastructure, transporting ammonia is one of the few scalable alternative fuels. Amogy, a sustainability tech startup, is focused on developing a portable, carbon-free energy system using ammonia as a renewable fuel. The company’s “ammonia-to-power technology works by “cracking liquid ammonia.” This process decouples nitrogen and hydrogen and uses it in fuel cells to generate electricity.
Amogy is bringing to market a 200-kilowatt modular ammonia-to-power called “power packs” that can be easily coupled into multiple modules to meet customer needs. Currently, the company is working with the maritime shipping market, which accounts for 3% of global emissions.
